Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself and those around you from the flu. FAQ

All you need to know

  • Seasonal influenza (or “flu”) is most often caused by type A or B influenza viruses. Symptoms include sudden onset of fever, cough (usually dry), headache, muscle and joint pain, sore throat and a runny nose. The cough can be severe and can last 2 or more weeks. Most people recover from fever and other symptoms within a week without requiring medical attention. However, influenza can cause severe illness or death in high-risk groups (see Who is most at risk? below).

Seasonal epidemics occur mainly during winter, from October to March in the northern hemisphere and April to September in the southern hemisphere. In tropical and subtropical countries, seasonal influenza can happen all year round.

  • Vaccination is recommended for everyone over six months of age, particularly those at high risk of developing severe complications from influenza and healthcare workers. This includes young children, elderly individuals, pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems, and those with underlying medical conditions.

Members can leverage the Teleconsultation feature available on the PMCare app to address specific medical inquiries.

  • Getting vaccinated against influenza is important because it can protect you from getting sick with the flu and potentially facing serious health complications or even death.

  • In general, it is recommended to receive the influenza vaccine annually, starting from 9 months after your last flu shot. The strains of the influenza virus can change from year to year, and the vaccine is updated annually to match the circulating strains. Yearly vaccination ensures that you have optimal protection against the most prevalent strains of influenza each flu season.

  • Yes, the flu vaccine is safe and has been extensively tested for its safety and effectiveness. It is approved by regulatory bodies such as the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and the WHO (World Health Organization). However, like any vaccine or medication, it may have some side effects, usually mild and temporary.

  • It is advisable to get vaccinated before the flu season begins, ideally in the early fall. However, getting the flu vaccine at any time during the flu season can still be beneficial, as it takes approximately two weeks for the body to develop protective antibodies after vaccination.

  • While the flu vaccine is highly effective, it does not guarantee 100% protection against the flu. However, vaccinated individuals who contract the flu tend to experience milder symptoms and have a lower risk of complications compared to those who are unvaccinated.

  • Most side effects of the flu vaccine are mild and temporary, such as soreness at the injection site and low-grade fever. Serious side effects are extremely rare. If you have concerns about potential allergies or specific medical conditions, consult with your healthcare provider before getting vaccinated.
